Tucker Pond Iced by Keith R Wahl, Made From RI Gallery
"Life is better at the lake". ~ Unknown. In this case, we will substitute "pond" for "lake".
I grew up walking by ponds. My grandparents had a farm property that had a pond right in the middle of the acreage. It proved handy for irrigation and for the cattle to slake their thirst. It also proved to be a great place to maintain domesticated ducks and geese as the years went by. A small aluminum boat was there for rowing in the summer.
In the winter, the pond would freeze over. There are photos of my grandmother taking a stroll across the frozen pond. It's also where my cousin and I learned about frozen pond springs, ice "sandwiching" in layers of ice and water. Once it was settled that the ice was solid, the pond would be walked across or skated upon. The springs were the moments not to venture out as the ice was thin.
So as I ventured down to Tucker Pond near home, I looked at the ice and thought of these memories. It took me back in time as I looked at the snow shimmering where leaves once sprouted. Such a beautiful place bringing forth innocent thoughts.
